Support Grows for Ken Paxton Among Senate Republicans
Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has garnered additional backing from Senate Republicans, with Senate Minority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) publicly endorsing him. Thune made his announcement on Hugh Hewitt’s show on Wednesday, shortly after a contentious primary in Texas wrapped up. Now, the focus shifts to Texas Congressman James Talarico, the Democratic candidate poised to challenge Paxton in the upcoming November election.
“Republican voters in Texas made their choice clear last night. Ken Paxton is our candidate for November. We need to do everything possible to ensure Texas remains red, that he wins, and that we keep far-left liberals out of the U.S. Senate,” Thune stated.
Thune emphasized the significance of the upcoming Senate seat, suggesting it will be crucial for determining the future direction of the country.
Interestingly, Paxton wasn’t the original pick for many Senate Republicans. Most supported the incumbent, Senator John Cornyn (R-Texas), through a tough election. It left many surprised when former President Donald Trump endorsed Paxton just a week before the decisive runoff.
The rise of Paxton has raised concerns among Republicans, who worry his nomination might inadvertently benefit Democrats, as they haven’t had a senator elected since 1988.
Talarico, who secured a decisive win over her primary opponent, Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-Texas), has prioritized party unity in preserving the Senate’s Republican majority.
“As a party, we must do everything to secure this race,” Thune mentioned. “Losing is simply not an option, especially for the future of Texas and the Senate landscape.”
Thune isn’t alone in his support; other Senate Republicans are rallying behind Paxton as well.
Senator Bernie Moreno (R-Ohio) quickly stepped forward following the primary results, urging the GOP to unite against Talarico, branding her a “far-left weirdo” who endorses open borders and progressive ideologies.
“I’m proud to support [Paxton]. Voters have expressed their opinions, and now it’s time for Republicans to come together and secure a win,” Moreno shared.
Senator John Barrasso (R-Wyo.), the second-ranking Senate Republican, echoed Moreno’s sentiments, labeling Talarico as a “far-left extremist,” who aligns with policies that he believes are too radical for Texas.
