Johnny Depp on battling allegations of domestic abuse 'until the very end'

Johnny Depp Opens Up About His Life Post-Divorce

In a recent interview, Johnny Depp discussed the profound impact of his tumultuous relationship with Amber Heard, which has been widely covered since their divorce in 2017. He talked about the domestic abuse allegations that were levied against him and his choice to “fight the bitter fight” in an effort to clear his name.

“It was ahead of its time,” Depp remarked, recalling how honored he felt when he wrote an op-ed in 2018 identifying himself as a “public figure representing domestic abuse.”

Amid the divorce proceedings, Depp mentioned that allegations of abuse against him tarnished his reputation, even though the article did not explicitly name him. He reflected on how the public scrutiny affected his life, particularly during the much-publicized trial in 2022, where both he and Heard accused each other of physical and verbal abuse.

“What hurts,” Depp shared, “is that there were a few people who, frankly, turned against me. They were at my kids’ party, throwing them in the air, and their fear was deciding who was right. I was something of a ‘MeToo crash test dummy.’ It was daunting.” He felt the need to observe who in the industry was playing it safe, suggesting a lack of courage in the face of public opinion.

Depp expressed no regrets about his past decisions, saying, “What can I do about last week’s dinner?” His thoughts flowed, revealing a mixed sense of defiance and introspection.

He noted that contrary to perceptions, Hollywood executives had essentially stopped calling him amidst the scandal. “It was like a soap opera, all aired out for everyone to see,” he said, though he has continued to work on various projects since then.

“I’ve been pondering this term ‘comeback’ because, honestly, I never went anywhere,” he commented, highlighting his ongoing connection to the film industry, though he noted that people may have distanced themselves from him out of fear.

Still, Depp expressed a desire for solitude, “Until recently, I rarely went out. If a friend invites me somewhere, I’m like, ‘I’ll probably ruin your night.'” He acknowledged that his celebrity status brings attention he sometimes isn’t ready for. “I can be quite happy being isolated,” he admitted, adding that he tends to stay engaged within his own thoughts, perhaps a sign of the psychological toll that has come with his fame.

As he continues to navigate his life post-divorce, it’s evident that Depp is still reflecting deeply on both his past and present circumstances.
