U.S. Men’s Hockey Team Honors Johnny Gaudreau

The U.S. men’s hockey team paid tribute to Johnny Gaudreau during their gold medal victory against Canada at the Winter Olympics, which concluded in overtime. This emotional moment took place in Milan, where several team members donned Gaudreau jerseys to commemorate the NHL star, who tragically lost his life in New Jersey in 2024, reportedly due to issues surrounding driving under the influence. To add a personal touch, they invited two of his children to the rink for pictures with the players.

At a vibrant nightclub in Miami on Monday night, players chanted Gaudreau’s nickname, “Johnny Hockey.” These moments are likely to stick with the team forever, and they resonated deeply with Gaudreau’s widow, Meredith, who watched the celebrations unfold.

“It meant the world to me,” she shared in an interview, expressing her gratitude for the team’s support. “I’m so thankful for their friendship and that they included our kids while honoring John. I think he would be incredibly humbled and honored by all of this. It’s really heartwarming to see how much they continue to honor him.”

Head coach Mike Sullivan noted that Gaudreau would have definitely been selected for the U.S. team if circumstances had been different.

Meredith also conveyed her appreciation for the team’s gestures, noting, “I think he’s very proud of them. They carried his jersey every step of the way, making him a part of this event. He truly wanted to be involved.” She found it heartening to witness the immense love and support they have received, especially from strangers who had never met her family.

“Thank you for all the support,” she said, reflecting on the messages and posts she has seen. “Every day, John’s influence amazes me, and this is proof of that. There isn’t a stage larger than the Olympics. Seeing him recognized globally, along with the support we’ve received, really helps us during tough times.”
