Johnson clashed with Stephanopoulos on government shutdown and healthcare issues

House Speaker’s Interview on Government Shutdown

On Wednesday, Mike Johnson, the Speaker of the House from Louisiana, appeared on ABC’s Good Morning America. During the segment, anchor George Stephanopoulos raised concerns about a looming partial government shutdown.

Stephanopoulos accused the Republicans, including Johnson, of risking the shutdown to block Medicaid funding that millions of Americans rely on. Johnson, however, firmly contested that notion.

“Your Democratic proposal is aimed at preventing millions from losing their health insurance,” Stephanopoulos pressed. “Why oppose it?”

In response, Johnson deemed Stephanopoulos’s statement “absurd.” The anchor shot back that what he presented was just a matter of fact.

Understanding the Shutdown

The partial government shutdown commenced late Wednesday, stemming from ongoing disputes over government funding resolutions. Democrats have argued that current contracts must extend the Affordable Care Act (ACA) tax credits into the next year, a push met with Republican resistance.

Johnson raised concerns over the possibility of illegal immigrants benefiting from healthcare access through these proposals. “What happened last night is clear. Forty-four Senate Democrats voted against a clean, nonpartisan funding resolution to keep the government running,” he stated, maintaining that the situation was straightforward.

Debate Between Johnson and Stephanopoulos

Stephanopoulos claimed that the proposal wouldn’t allow medical care for illegal immigrants since they are ineligible for programs like Medicare and Medicaid. Johnson countered, asserting that the Democratic plan would erode the provisions placed by the Republicans in their previous legislation.

“It essentially means undoing the changes we’ve made with our ‘big, beautiful bill,’” Johnson explained, referring to a law they passed on July 4th.

He asserted that the Congressional Budget Office had confirmed that reducing ineligible recipients through their law had helped lower premiums. However, Stephanopoulos challenged him by stating that the CBO hadn’t addressed issues related to illegal immigration.

In a related interview later, Vice President JD Vance remarked that Democrats aimed to reinstate two Biden-era regulations. These include expanded emergency care for illegal immigrants and large-scale paroles that could make many eligible for taxpayer-funded services. “In the ‘big and beautiful bill,’ funding was allocated for healthcare for illegal aliens,” Vance noted.
