Johnson criticizes Democrat 'Marxists' after they reject GOP shutdown bill for the 10th time

Government Shutdown Enters Three-Week Mark

Speaker Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana) has voiced strong criticism of the Democratic Party, suggesting it has shifted under the influence of far-left “Marxist” elements. This statement came on the 16th day of the ongoing federal government shutdown.

During a press briefing on Thursday, Johnson expressed frustration, blaming Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and other Democratic leaders for extending the fiscal impasse for political advantage. “This isn’t your grandfather’s Democratic Party. The far-left is in charge now, and it’s impacting real lives,” he asserted.

Senate Democrats have rejected funding proposals from Republicans on ten separate occasions.

Recently, GOP leaders suggested a seven-week extension for fiscal year 2025 funding levels, known as a continuing resolution (CR). Their goal was to allow time for Congressional negotiators to finalize a long-term budget for fiscal year 2026.

However, Democrats have reacted negatively to being excluded from these discussions. Schumer and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries have made it clear that any agreement must address healthcare concerns, particularly a continuation of pandemic-era Obamacare subsidies that are set to expire this year.

Furthermore, Johnson and his colleagues have accused Schumer of yielding to pressure from progressives. This follows Schumer’s earlier support of a funding bill that helped avert a government shutdown earlier this year, which has left him facing backlash from the left.

“The only reason I can see for this is that Chuck Schumer is avoiding the scrutiny he faced from the far-left in March for doing what was responsible at the time,” Johnson commented.

He went on to highlight notable figures within the party, identifying Democratic socialist Sen. Bernie Sanders, progressive Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and mayoral hopeful Zoran Mamdani as key voices. “It’s concerning to see Mr. Mamdani potentially becoming the mayor of New York City, a place once seen as the backbone of capitalism. There’s a clear rise of Marxist ideals in the Democratic Party,” Johnson stated.

Reflecting on Schumer’s long tenure, Johnson suggested that the Senate Minority Leader is aware of emerging challenges, particularly from younger progressive figures within the party.

Meanwhile, Schumer has criticized Johnson’s decision to keep the House on recess during this fiscal standoff. “Republican leaders, especially Speaker Johnson, seem to think they can solve problems by hiding away. The American people can’t afford to wait for Republican inaction,” Schumer remarked.
