House Speaker’s Remarks on Government Shutdown
On Wednesday, House Speaker Mike Johnson expressed his views on Fox News, accusing key Democrats of focusing more on maintaining their positions rather than addressing the needs of struggling Americans after the House’s vote to reopen the government.
The House passed the measure with a vote of 222-209, effectively ending a 43-day government shutdown just after 8 PM ET. In a conversation with Sean Hannity, Johnson commented, “Chuck Schumer and Hakeem Jeffries are both from New York. They were in need of political protection, particularly as Marxists seem to have taken charge of the Democratic Party in their states.”
He added, “They were more worried about facing backlash from the radicals within their party than they were about the impact of taking food away from hungry families.”
Johnson referred to the end of the shutdown as a significant victory and stated, “The long national nightmare is finally over. The Democratic shutdown has been defeated by Republicans. We came together and delivered exactly what we promised to the American people.”
The bill now heads to President Trump’s desk for his signature, with Johnson noting he would submit it promptly.
The recent fiscal standoff in Washington was significantly fueled by Democrats’ unwillingness to back a funding bill unless it included renewed subsidies for Obamacare. Johnson criticized this stance, saying, “It was simply a selfish political maneuver. It caused unnecessary pain for the American people, and I believe it will be remembered for a long time.”
The House-backed bill is set to fund the government through January 30 and will reverse federal layoffs that were enacted under the Trump administration in October. Johnson insisted that the bill does not cater to any of the Democrats’ alleged extreme demands, stating, “We gave them nothing, none of their outrageous requests. I believe that good has prevailed today, and it was well overdue.”
Additionally, Johnson remarked that President Trump is making significant efforts to assist those affected by the shutdown, expressing confidence that this momentum will persist. He mentioned, “Expect to see the same level of dedication moving forward. The entire Cabinet and administration will be working tirelessly to restore government operations as quickly as possible.”
