Johnson Criticizes Democrats for Suddenly Showing Interest in Epstein Files

Speaker Mike Johnson’s Comments on Epstein Files

On Wednesday, Speaker Mike Johnson took a bold stance, suggesting that there’s a political motive behind the Democrats’ recent focus on the Epstein files. He noted that Republicans are facing pressure to publish documents related to the late sexual predator Jeffrey Epstein.

Johnson seemed to support Democrats using the administration’s management of these files as a way to gain political favor, even though the same Democrats didn’t push for the release of documents concerning Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell during Biden’s presidency. This commentary follows House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries’ assertion earlier this week that his party didn’t prioritize these files until Trump came into office.

“We’re not going to let Democrats use this for political cover,” Johnson remarked, between off-the-cuff remarks to reporters. “The Biden administration has had these Epstein files for four years, and it’s clear that many in Congress weren’t concerned about it back then.”

For the past two weeks, House Democrats have voted on a measure that would compel the Department of Justice (DOJ) to disclose files related to Epstein and Maxwell. Meanwhile, Johnson chose to wrap up legislative business early, heading out for an August break. This decision effectively limited the Democrats’ opportunity to scrutinize Republicans over the Epstein files.

Previously, Johnson had resisted proposals to move forward with measures related to Epstein’s files, claiming that the Trump administration was actively working on releasing relevant documents. He suggested that if the DOJ doesn’t facilitate the release by September, they might address the issue once the legislative session resumes.

“Voting at this moment seems pointless, as the administration has already taken significant steps to unearth these materials,” Johnson stated. “We’ll revisit that process later.”

“The president emphasized that all credible evidence should be shared with the public,” he added.

On Friday, a federal judge denied a DOJ request to release crucial materials tied to the government’s investigation into Epstein from 2005 to 2007.

Jeffries has shown little inclination to increase pressure regarding the Epstein files. Some Democrats have even indicated that the current discussions might not actually benefit their party.

Johnson criticized his Democratic counterparts for urging him to release records when they themselves did not seek their release during Biden’s tenure.

Interestingly, Jeffries confirmed that the topic of Epstein’s files has only recently gained traction among House Democrats after Trump’s election.

In a recent exchange, when asked why Democrats are suddenly focused on these files, Jeffries conceded, “This is not something that any of us as House Democrats have focused on.”

Johnson also questioned the motivations behind bipartisan efforts led by Republican Rep. Thomas Massey and Democratic Rep. Ro Khanna, suggesting they could have introduced similar measures during Biden’s administration but chose not to.

“They could’ve pushed for this at any point in the last four years; they didn’t,” he noted. “It seems suspicious that they waited until Trump was in office.”

Massey and Khanna plan to bring their proposal for a vote when the House reconvenes in September, currently backed by over ten Republicans.

Johnson also expressed skepticism toward the Massey-Khanna bill, arguing it doesn’t adequately protect the personal information of victims that might be included in the files.

While he has refrained from supporting any House legislation regarding public information about Epstein before the August break, Johnson emphasized that his cautious approach isn’t born from fear of Republican votes.

“This isn’t out of fear,” he asserted. “Our goal is to maximize transparency and reveal the truth.”
