Johnson dismisses Musk’s threats about campaign spending: ‘I’m not worried’

Johnson brushes off Musk campaign spending threats: 'It doesn't concern me'

Mike Johnson Downplays Musk’s Influence on Trump’s Campaign

House Speaker Mike Johnson, a Republican from Louisiana, recently dismissed concerns that Elon Musk’s public fallout with former President Trump might impact campaign contributions. Johnson expressed confidence in their policy goals, indicating he wasn’t particularly worried about Musk’s criticisms.

The tension between Trump and Musk reportedly started when Musk criticized Trump’s legislative agenda. Johnson, who has formed a rapport with various officials during this time, stated that Musk may have been misled regarding the details of the spending package, which Trump has referred to as “big and beautiful.”

“Honestly, it doesn’t really concern me,” Johnson shared in an interview. “We’re going to win regardless because we’re committed to fulfilling our promises to hardworking Americans.”

He also mentioned that he values his relationship with Musk, noting, “I’ve reached out to him this week… I want to ensure he understands the bill correctly; I believe there’s been a misunderstanding.”

Musk, who contributed significantly to Trump’s 2024 campaign, became the largest donor in that presidential race. Recently, the conflict between Trump and Musk escalated, marked by public insults and threats. Musk suggested that had he not backed Trump financially, the former president would have lost to Vice President Harris. In response, Trump threatened to end federal contracts with Musk’s companies.

As the situation heated up, there was even talk among tech executives about forming a new political party and accusing Trump of being associated with individuals linked to disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein. Trump has denied any close connections to Epstein.

Musk’s opposition to the GOP’s massive spending bill, which he labeled as “unpleasant and hateful,” stems from concerns about rising deficit levels. He argued that the bill would exacerbate national debt without making enough cuts. This legislation is expected to face challenges in the Senate.

While Musk recently parted ways with one of Trump’s top advisors for the Department of Government Efficiency, he seemed open to mending relations. However, it appeared Trump was inclined to move forward.

In the same interview, Johnson defended the spending package, appreciating Trump’s handling of the situation. “We’re aiming to achieve substantial progress… I admire the president’s approach; he’s letting things go,” he explained. “He’s focused on delivering for the people, and so are the Republicans in both chambers.”

“We’re going to see this through, as I’ve promised people,” Johnson continued. “If you’re a hardworking American struggling to support your family, you’re going to appreciate this law.”

He concluded by stating, “We believe that by the time we approach the midterm elections in 2026, everyone will be in a better place.”
