House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana) and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-New York) announced the creation of a bipartisan task force to investigate the assassination attempt on former President Trump earlier this month.
“The security failures that allowed the assassination attempt on Donald Trump are shocking. In response to bipartisan demands for answers, we are announcing the formation of a House Task Force of seven Republicans and six Democrats to thoroughly investigate this matter,” Johnson and Jeffries said in a joint statement on Tuesday. “The task force will be empowered with subpoena power and will act swiftly to uncover the facts, ensure accountability, and ensure failures like this never happen again.”
The task force will be made up of 13 members, including six Democrats and seven Republicans.SolutionThe task force is being created. Rep. Mike Kelly (R-PA), who was sitting in the front row at Trump’s rally during the attack, is the lead sponsor of the resolution.
House Majority Whip Tom Emmer (R-Minn.) told The Hill that the resolution would likely come up for a vote Wednesday night. It would need broad bipartisan support, including two-thirds of the House, and would be considered under suspension of the rules.
Emmer said he understood Johnson and Jeffries had discussed all the details of the task force and predicted support would be easy to secure.
The goal of the special committee, which has subpoena power, is to evaluate the security flaws that led to the attacks and make recommendations on agency changes or legislation to implement them.
Johnson made the promise to the task force just days after last week’s shooting.
A shooting at a Trump rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, left the former president wounded, one rally attendee dead and two others seriously injured. The 20-year-old suspected shooter has died.
