Johnson ‘not worried’ about Greene threat about ousting him as Speaker

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana) threatened to move Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) to resign on Wednesday if she passes a budget continuation resolution during the crisis. He later said he was “not worried” about being forced out of his job. Funding negotiations currently underway.

Prime Minister Johnson is in the midst of difficult negotiations with the Senate and White House over border security and foreign aid spending. He signed another top-line spending deal to fund the government over the weekend, but said he would not agree to additional Ukraine aid without border security concessions.

in CNN interview on WednesdayJohnson said he was not concerned about growing threats from conservatives to remove him as speaker of the House, a fate shared by his predecessor, former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.). Ta.

“I have a job to do,” he said. “We all have to do our jobs. Marjorie Taylor Greene is very upset about the lack of oversight and lack of clarity on the plan for fundraising, and I am as well.” is.”

“I talked to her privately about this matter at quite some length, and she made her position very clear,” he continued. “We have to do our job. We have to make sure we continue to cover all these bases and we'll see how this resolves itself. We're not worried about that. We have a job to do here. And we have to make sure we get the answers we asked for.”

This week, opposition Republicans squandered procedural votes and postponed floor votes in protest of the superlative deal, and multiple lawmakers publicly called for scrapping the negotiated deal.

The deal caps government spending at $1.59 trillion and includes approximately $69 billion in additional budget adjustments, which is more than the spending included in the debt limit deal that McCarthy struck with President Biden last year. This is roughly in line with the upper limit, which angered Republicans and led to McCarthy's ouster.

Rep. Garrett Graves (R-Louisiana) denounced the opposition as “just a play.”

“This is a drama caucus,” he told The Hill last week. “Who are the conservatives? Well done, guys.”

Congress is looking ahead to Friday and a Feb. 2 closure deadline.
