Vigil for Charlie Kirk at the U.S. Capitol
On Monday, Speaker Mike Johnson led a vigil at the U.S. Capitol to honor conservative activist Charlie Kirk, inviting members from both political parties to attend.
The event is scheduled for 6:15 PM EDT in Statue Hall, just before a planned House vote.
The timing for other time zones is as follows:
- CDT (Central Daylight Time) – 5:15 PM
- MDT (Mountain Daylight Time) – 4:15 PM
- PDT (Pacific Daylight Time) – 3:15 PM
In his remarks, Johnson, a Republican from Louisiana, underscored the importance of prayer during this tough time following Kirk’s assassination last Wednesday.
GOP leaders and other Congressional members are expected to join him in paying tribute to Kirk. This vigil comes on the heels of a prayer moment that Johnson led on the House floor shortly after the shooting, which resulted in some tension between Republicans and Democrats when Rep. Lauren Bebert from Colorado insisted on verbal prayers.
Prior to this, Kirk’s prayer vigil took place at the Kennedy Center on Sunday evening, attended by numerous prominent figures including Johnson, Representatives Andy Biggs and Anna Paulina Luna, White House Press Secretary Caroline Levitt, and the Secretary of Health and Human Services, Robert Jay Jun.
Simultaneously, various Republican lawmakers are advocating for an official memorial for Kirk at the Capitol. Notably, Rep. Anna Paulina Luna has spearheaded a movement urging Speaker Johnson to commission a statue of Kirk. In a letter shared with fellow members, she emphasized that this statue would serve as a reminder that political conflict should not lead to violence and acknowledged the significant impact Kirk had on her political journey.
