Jon Gosselin recently shared that he faced a serious health scare just weeks before his wedding to Stephanie Lebo last November. In a conversation with a news outlet, the former reality star, now 47, recounted how he recognized he needed immediate medical attention after expelling what he described as a “blood clot.”
Gosselin started feeling unwell in late October, just as he was preparing for his annual Halloween party. He recalled a pain in his calf that he initially brushed off, thinking it could be anything. However, the discomfort shifted to his groin, which prompted him to confide in his son, Eric. “Something’s wrong,” he thought to himself.
Later that night, the pain in his groin subsided, but he developed shoulder pain instead. The situation escalated when he started coughing and vomiting what appeared to be blood. This alarming symptom compelled him to wake Steph, saying, “I have to go to the hospital.” Despite being told it was risky due to his condition, he drove himself there, only to discover that his blood pressure was alarmingly high.
After undergoing an MRI, doctors found deep vein thrombosis (DVT) in his leg and two pulmonary embolisms—serious conditions that can be life-threatening. Gosselin was admitted and given an intravenous drip of blood thinners containing heparin. He had previously experienced DVT following a COVID-19 hospitalization but had assumed it was because he was inactive at the time.
He expressed concern that this health issue might be chronic, saying, “I don’t know. I’m getting tests for that.” His partner, Stephanie, was understandably upset, which added to Gosselin’s stress. He tried to keep his health concerns from her until after their wedding.
As he worked with doctors to understand the underlying issue, he mentioned taking testosterone to manage his red blood cell count, and also indicated he missed a related appointment. Moreover, he acknowledged he was under medication and had adjusted his testosterone dosage to balance his levels.
Gosselin noted that his children, Hannah and Colin, were worried when they learned about his health crisis, blaming his late-night DJ gigs for his symptoms. “That has nothing to do with my lifestyle,” he reassured them. “It’s more about genetics.” He reflected on how the sudden return of DVT symptoms was surprising, given it had been years since his last diagnosis.
In the wake of his health scare, Gosselin faced a monumental hospital bill—around $20,000—which he deemed shocking. He turned to a friend, Rachel Strauss, for help navigating the complex medical billing system, which proved confusing and burdensome.
Strauss, a medical professional, assisted him in analyzing and disputing charges that seemed to be double-billed. Gosselin later expressed frustration over the healthcare system, emphasizing that while it may function as designed, it doesn’t serve patients’ best interests.
He attended a film screening that explored prescription drug pricing, and during this time, he made it clear that he wanted to inform others about the hidden issues within the healthcare system. Gosselin is also looking forward to a honeymoon with Stephanie, reflecting on the unexpected lessons he learned through his health scare.
