Gruden Lawsuit Against NFL Moves Toward Public Trial

John Gruden and the NFL might be heading towards public litigation after the Nevada Supreme Court ruled against the league’s efforts to keep the case confidential.

The court’s unanimous decision, announced on Thursday, follows the NFL’s unsuccessful attempt to challenge a ruling from August. That ruling rejected the NFL’s bid to dismiss Gruden’s case, which he filed through the NFL’s arbitration process.

While the NFL has the option to appeal this decision to the U.S. Supreme Court, it remains uncertain if they will take that step. A spokesperson for the NFL declined to comment following the court’s announcement.

Gruden’s lawsuit targets not just the NFL but also Commissioner Roger Goodell. He claims that they are responsible for publicizing statements he made, deemed racist, homophobic, and sexist, which he argues were aimed at ruining his reputation and career as the former head coach of the Las Vegas Raiders.

Gruden resigned from the Raiders in 2021, asserting that he felt “forced to resign” after one of his emails was leaked. This email was part of a broader NFL investigation into sexual harassment and workplace culture.

Specifically, Gruden had emailed the team’s president, Bruce Allen, while working as a commentator for Monday Night Football during the years 2011 to 2018.

In August, following a ruling that denied the NFL’s attempt to enforce arbitration, the league filed an appeal and sought a rehearing. The NFL contends that the court’s decision could negatively affect arbitration agreements across various sectors.
