Jon Gruden receives important decision in NFL lawsuit

John Gruden’s Legal Battle with the NFL Moves Forward

Former NFL coach John Gruden scored a legal victory on Monday when the Nevada Supreme Court ruled that his lawsuit against the NFL can move to court rather than being settled through arbitration. This decision is significant, particularly given his contentious departure from the Las Vegas Raiders.

Gruden initiated the lawsuit back in 2021 after parting ways with the team. His claims include that the NFL and Commissioner Roger Goodell engaged in a “malicious orchestrated campaign” to leak emails that effectively derailed his career. These emails stemmed from his time as an analyst with ESPN and as a “Monday Night Football” broadcaster.

In 2022, the NFL had appealed to the Nevada Supreme Court after a Las Vegas judge dismissed their attempt to entirely dismiss Gruden’s claims or to move discussions into a mandatory arbitration process overseen by Goodell.

In a 5-2 ruling, the court stated that the NFL’s arbitration clause does not apply to Gruden, marking a notable stance against such corporate procedures. The NFL has yet to comment on this ruling.

Following the decision, Gruden’s attorney expressed satisfaction with the court’s choices. “This ruling not only aids Gruden but also sheds light on the unfair arbitration processes many employees face,” said Adam Hosmer Henner of McDonald Carano LLP. He emphasized that this outcome will help clarify Gruden’s public image and push for accountability from the NFL.

Gruden was at the helm of the Raiders when they shifted from Oakland to Las Vegas. He is seeking financial reparations, arguing that the selective leak of emails breached both his contractual agreements and reputational standing.

Interestingly, since his departure from the Raiders, Gruden has been seen engaging with NFL players, including those from teams like the New Orleans Saints, Detroit Lions, and Jacksonville Jaguars. He also holds interests in the Arena Football One League’s Nashville Cats.

In July, he shared his hopes for an NFL return, stating, “Hopefully, I’m not finished. I’m about to make a comeback. I’m working hard to get another shot,” suggesting optimism despite the challenges he’s faced.

“I don’t care if I coach at Jones Middle School or not,” he remarked, signaling his unwavering commitment to the profession he loves. “I’m going to coach again.” It seems, despite the setbacks, Gruden is determined to stay in the game in some capacity.
