John Jones Retires from MMA Competition

MMA heavyweight champion John Jones has officially retired, a decision confirmed by UFC president Dana White on Saturday.

Jones is often regarded as the greatest mixed martial artist in history. White revealed that he spoke with Jones on Friday and supported his choice to step away from the sport. With Jones retiring, Tom Aspinall has become the undisputed heavyweight champion. Jones concludes his career with a record of 28 wins and 1 loss.

During a press conference in Azerbaijan, White stated, “John Jones called us last night and retired. John Jones has officially retired. Tom Aspinall is the heavyweight champion of the UFC.”

Jones moved up from the light heavyweight division in 2023 and captured the heavyweight championship from Cyril Gane. He successfully defended his title by defeating Stipe Miocic via TKO in the third round at UFC 309 this past November.

Notably, Jones was an outspoken supporter of former President Donald Trump last year. After his victory over Miocic, he even performed a dance associated with Trump. During the event, he expressed gratitude, stating, “I want to thank President Donald Trump for coming here tonight.”

After his win, Jones led the crowd in singing “America! America!” which they joyfully joined in.

In his remarks, Jones also mentioned, “I’m proud to be a great American champion and I’m proud to be a Christian American champion.” That night, he approached Trump, who was seated ringside alongside prominent figures like Elon Musk, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., and Tarsi Gabbard, and presented him with his UFC title belt.
