Historian John Meacham recently overlooked that there has been a significant amount of political violence in the country, primarily linked to individuals on the political left.
California Senator Alex Padilla was handcuffed and briefly detained after he attempted to disrupt a press conference led by Homeland Security Secretary Christie Noem in Los Angeles. Meacham appeared on Morning Joe and discussed the growing tensions in the U.S., suggesting they mirror the climate before the Civil War.
Meacham remarked, “It’s arguably the most alarming situation; almost every civil servant, including judges, is facing pressures that are unprecedented. You know, the threats we’re seeing are real.” He further suggested, “I think what David French wrote is very insightful.”
He continued, “What’s alarming here, Katy, is you actually have this extraordinary atmosphere of political violence, and it really makes you think about how the 1850s unfolded, considering our current situation.”
Trump has survived three assassination attempts, with two occurring during his 2024 campaign. On September 15, 2024, Secret Service agents intercepted what appeared to be an assassination attempt near Trump International Golf Club.
On July 13, 2024, Trump was shot in the ear while speaking at a campaign rally in Pennsylvania, and in 2016, a 20-year-old from the UK attempted to shoot him during a rally in Las Vegas.
In a video shared recently, the FBI identified a man named Elpido Reyna, who was seen throwing rocks at the windshields of vehicles belonging to federal law enforcement. The FBI has offered a $50,000 reward for leads that would result in his capture.
In Seattle, rioters lashed out at a man who stopped them from throwing an American flag into a fire.
Regarding the incident involving Padilla, a spokesperson stated, “He chose to cause a scene at the press conference without even identifying himself. Padilla was repeatedly instructed to leave, which he didn’t comply with, and officers acted based on the assumption he posed a threat.”
Special Advisor Jack Smith has filed multiple indictments against Trump in relation to his attempts to contest classified documents and the outcome of the 2020 election.
During Biden’s presidency, Meacham privately helped craft some of Biden’s speeches for the 2020 campaign.
