Jon Rahm emerging as a Ryder Cup legend similar to his hero, Seve Ballesteros

Rahm Emerges as Ryder Cup Icon, Following in Ballesteros’ Footsteps

Every couple of years, during the Ryder Cup season, Seve Ballesteros becomes a prominent figure for Team Europe.

Pictures of Ballesteros, along with his iconic quotes, line the walls of their team rooms like a familiar backdrop.

He serves as a significant source of inspiration, having forged a legacy as one of Spain’s greatest golfers and a standout in Ryder Cup history, holding a record of 20 wins, 12 losses, and 5 ties.

No one admires Ballesteros more than Jon Rahm, a 30-year-old Spanish golfer who sees him as a role model.

It’s only a matter of time—perhaps sooner than we think—before Rahm embodies the qualities that Ballesteros represents. He could become the kind of idol for future players that Ballesteros has been for him.

During this Ryder Cup, Rahm established himself as a formidable competitor. He participated in Sunday’s singles match with a 3-1 record, bringing his overall record in the event to 10-4-3.

On Friday, he secured victories in both his matches—foursomes in the morning and fourballs in the afternoon—before splitting his matches on Saturday. His record with his partner over the last 12 matches stands at an impressive 9-1-2.

His recent loss, teaming up with JJ Spaun and Xander Schauffele against Sepp Straka, marked the first defeat for Rahm and his partner since their initial Ryder Cup together in 2018.

European captain Luke Donald guided Rahm on Friday’s Foursome, setting a positive tone for the team. The duo overwhelmed Bryson DeChambeau and Justin Thomas, and later, Rahm and Tyrrell Hatton defeated Patrick Cantlay and Schauffele in the afternoon round.

“I trust Jon as a leader,” Donald said, explaining his choice for the leadoff spot.

Thomas Bjorn, the first captain Rahm played under in the Ryder Cups, described him as “probably the most exciting player to join the game since Rory McIlroy.” Bjorn noted Rahm’s strength, power, and determination to excel in golf.

Rahm is on a path to become a legendary figure for the European Ryder Cup, much like Ballesteros.

What’s pleasing about Rahm is his humble demeanor, even as one of the top players in the world.

After his win with Hatton on Friday, Rahm was asked about his impressive Ryder Cup record and responded, “I can’t claim full credit. I had a fantastic partner. It’s a team effort. I’ve been fortunate to have a great teammate.”

After defeating Hatton on Saturday morning, Rahm reflected, “We played alongside each other on many holes, and it was incredible to witness his performance. What he achieved on the green was just spectacular.”

Hatton commended Rahm too, saying, “He’s an exceptional player and a great companion on the fairways. He delivers remarkable shots at crucial moments.”

One of the standout moments of the day was when Rahm made a 50-foot birdie putt on No. 8 in the Foursomes, giving him and Hatton a lead they never relinquished.

“Honestly, I was just trying to get it on the green, maybe somewhere around the right distance,” he explained.

It’s hard not to describe Rahm as a near-perfect player for Team Europe, both this week and throughout his Ryder Cup journey.

If he hasn’t already cemented his reputation as a modern-day Ballesteros, he’s certainly on the verge. His presence and contributions resonate throughout the team, embodying the spirit of the idol they all look up to.
