Jon Stewart Critiques Democrats on Government Shutdown

Jon Stewart is expressing strong disapproval of the Democrats who chose to end the government shutdown, referring to their actions as a “world-class collapse.”

During his appearance on Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show,” he remarked, “They succumbed to the shutdown.” He seemed astonished by this turn of events.

Stewart highlighted how, “Less than a full week after the best election night results in years, seven Democratic senators and independents sided with Republicans to end the government shutdown.”

This decision, made by eight members of the Senate Democratic Caucus, came as part of an effort to reopen federal operations after a lengthy shutdown, aligning with Republicans to vote in favor.

The agreement included a pledge from Senate Minority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) to address Obamacare subsidies by the year’s end, a key demand from Democrats during the standoff.

Stewart noted, “The wind was on our side. We won elections across the country,” referencing the Democrats’ successes in early November.

He added, “Democrats, you sold out the entire shutdown not to achieve your goals, but merely to ensure you wouldn’t get them later.”

In a pointed question, he asked, “What good does a promise of a vote in the Senate do you guys? You don’t control the Senate. Do you even know how this works?”

Stewart also took aim at Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer for his “no” vote on the legislation to end the shutdown.

He speculated, “Either all eight senators who coincidentally voted to capitulate are not up for re-election in 2026, or Chuck Schumer worked behind the scenes to appease Republicans while safeguarding vulnerable Democrats, including himself.”

A spokesperson for Schumer has not yet responded to requests for comment regarding Stewart’s critique.

Stewart characterized the situation as a “global collapse by the Democratic Party,” suggesting that Americans are starting to recognize the gap between Donald Trump’s manipulative rhetoric and the realities of everyday life.

Stewart pointed out that through the shutdown, people are seeing past the illusions, saying, “It’s the first time I’ve been able to distract myself, look at the harsh reality, and see through the lies on his bald face,” referencing Trump’s claims of “no inflation” during a recent interview.

“This is what Democrats have wasted: The country has finally shaken off President Trump’s Jedi mind trick,” he declared, underscoring how they squandered their influence, lost voter enthusiasm, and failed to capitalize on their recent victories.
