Jon Stewart on Monday criticized former Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy for labeling Donald Trump a “truth teller” on “The Daily Show” and expressed his support for the former president. said they were imagining a “weird” version of Trump.
The comedian played a clip of Trump supporters talking about why they are in his camp, including supporting workers and free speech, and contrasted it with the president's own statements. He then turned to the claim that Trump, who has made baseless and baseless claims throughout his career as a politician, was telling it like it is.
“Are you kidding me now?” Stewart exclaimed after footage of Ramaswamy calling President Trump a “truth teller” appeared on screen during an earlier Fox News interview.
“Is he a truth teller?” Stewart asked incredulously.
“The Daily Show” then aired excerpts from last month's presidential debate about Trump's false claim that Haitian immigrants in Springfield, Ohio, were eating residents' pets.
“We're not in a dilemma, we're in a bit of a conundrum. The qualities and policies that people profess to admire and love about former President Trump seem to accurately reflect him. I don't think so,” Stewart said. “It's as if they created a fictional character, a strange Trump.”
“You wonder what country Donald Trump thinks he's going to lead,” Steward asked.
Reached for comment, the Trump campaign called Stewart “a washed-up guy who has no idea what he's talking about.”
The Hill has reached out to Mr. Ramaswamy's former camp for further comment.
