Jon Stewart, the host of “The Daily Show,” expressed uncertainty about the Democratic Party’s trajectory during a podcast episode on Thursday. Even after the party’s recent state and local election victories, he felt the Democrats remain divided.
Stewart shared his thoughts with guests Chris Hayes from MSNBC and David Plouffe, a former Obama campaign manager. He emphasized, “I think the Democratic Party is still a mess. I truly believe the Democratic Party is a mess.”
Although Democrats secured wins in several blue states on Tuesday, including Abigail Spanberger in Virginia and Mikie Sherrill in New Jersey, Stewart insisted these victories do not equate to a revival. He noted, however, that there’s significant untapped energy within the electorate. “What this shows me, again, is that there is much more latent energy within the United States of America than any of us ever imagined,” he said. “The challenge is channeling that energy.” He also expressed disbelief at some of the current actions of Democratic leaders.
Plouffe responded positively about the midterm elections, stating they should be favorable for Democrats since Republicans are in control and public sentiment is largely negative toward them. Yet, he agreed with Stewart on the Democratic Party’s challenges, recognizing that both parties are facing obstacles. “We have kind of a market failure. Eighty percent of the country doesn’t like either option,” he said.
Plouffe went on to discuss strategies for strengthening the Democratic Party, emphasizing a need for candidates who not only criticize Republicans but also hold their own party accountable. “If we can put those things together, that will make us more competitive in more places,” he mentioned, stressing the importance of maximizing strengths while addressing weaknesses.
