Jon Stewart on Clintons and Subpoenas
On his podcast Wednesday, “Daily Show” host Jon Stewart expressed that both former President Bill Clinton and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton should definitely comply with subpoenas from Congress. This was in response to a question regarding their involvement in the House Oversight Committee’s investigation into Jeffrey Epstein, to which both Clintons currently refuse to respond.
Stewart wasn’t shy about his opinion. He acknowledged the complexities surrounding the situation, asking, “But why should they comply when the Justice Department won’t release the files?” He seemed a bit perplexed about the overall dynamics—questioning if compliance should be universal, rather than special, when the Justice Department isn’t providing transparency itself. “So how does that fit?” he wondered aloud. Yet, he reinforced his stance by affirming, “Personally, do I think they should comply? Absolutely.” He seemed frustrated about the ongoing nature of the investigation as well, remarking on the long journey it could take for the victims to receive justice.
The Clintons have not yet made a public statement regarding this issue. The subpoenas came from the House Oversight Committee, not the DOJ. Committee Chairman James Comer reiterated that failure to comply could result in consequences. “This same legal subpoena was issued to the Clintons, and they defied it,” he stated, emphasizing the seriousness of the matter.
In a letter from their lawyers, the Clintons took aim at Comer’s leadership of the investigation, dismissing the subpoena as excessive. They seemed to suggest that dragging this out doesn’t align with the aim of delivering justice to Epstein’s victims.
Meanwhile, under the Epstein File Transparency Act signed last November, the DOJ is under pressure to release unclassified documents tied to the case. As it stands, the DOJ has reviewed over two million files, with only a small fraction made public so far. These slowly revealed documents are crucial for the ongoing quest for justice regarding Epstein’s actions.
