Jon Voight, the Oscar-winning actor and vocal pro-Israel conservative, said in an interview published Tuesday that his daughter Angelina Jolie’s support for the Palestinians was due to “being influenced by anti-Semites.”
The interview variety, Said:
The modern-day Voight resembles none of the troubled men tormented by circumstance he’s played in a career spanning six decades: aspiring hustler Joe Buck in Midnight Cowboy, paralyzed Vietnam vet Luke Martin in Come Home, suburbanite-turned-vengeful killer Ed Gentry in Deliverance. He’s now reconciled with his estranged daughter, Angelina Jolie, and plays the role of a totally wacky grandfather to his six grandchildren.
…
No one is safe from Voight’s right-wing political views, not even his daughter, who he feels has fallen victim to an anti-Semitic ploy. (“Angelina wishes him well but won’t speak about him publicly,” a source close to the actress said.) Though he says her politics aren’t his, to say the least, his are a topic of endless circular debate, especially with Trump on the rise. The actor is a staunch supporter of Israel, most recently backing its response to the Oct. 7 attacks by Hamas; Jolie, meanwhile, is a longtime refugee activist who now condemns Israel’s killing of women and children in Gaza. [sic]In our conversation, Voight never backed down, repeatedly criticizing her stance on Palestine, like a candidate attacking their opponent in a 30-second ad. “She’s been bombarded with propaganda,” he said. “She’s been influenced by anti-Semites. Angie has ties to the UN and enjoys speaking out for refugees. But these people are not refugees.”
Israel is not intentionally killing women and children in Gaza. Israel strives to avoid civilian casualties, unlike Hamas, which targets Israeli civilians while hiding among Palestinian civilians.
Voigt’s statement that the Palestinian residents of the Gaza Strip are “not refugees” was a reference to the fact that most of them were resettled there 75 years ago, and many were born and raised in the Gaza Strip, so are not “refugees” in the sense used in other conflicts.
October, Jolie release Hamas’ statement on the terrorist attacks and subsequent war: “What happened in Israel was an act of terrorism, but it cannot justify the innocent lives lost in the bombing of civilians in Gaza who have nowhere to go, no access to food or water, no possibility of evacuation, and no basic human right to seek refuge across the border.”
Palestinians receive huge amounts of aid but “have nowhere to go” because neighboring Arab countries refuse to accept it.
