Photos capture the heartbreaking moment of fallen NYPD detective Jonathan Diller’s 1-year-old son reaching out from behind a flag-draped coffin, while his heartbroken widow Stephanie was gently kissing the boy’s head.
Ryan Diller watched from his mother’s arms as his father’s casket was carried from St. Rose of Lima Roman Catholic Church in Massapequa Park after the funeral Saturday morning.
As the coffin was lowered into a waiting hearse, Ryan appeared to have his arms outstretched in the direction of it.
Stephanie Diller, now a widow and a single mother at just 29 years old, kissed the boy on the head.
They also watched a helicopter fly over the site, which the boy seemed intrigued by.
Later, the flag that had covered Diller’s casket was ceremonially folded and handed to Stephanie, joined by several relatives of the fallen officer.
Ryan, who just turned one year old on January 10, was described as the apple of Detective Diller’s eye throughout the funeral.
Stephanie, a three-year NYPD veteran, was so happy when her son’s first word was “dada,” she recalled in a tearful but stoic eulogy. .
“Now I don’t want to stop hearing Ryan say ‘dada’ to me,” she told the packed church.

Also, while in prison, in honor of Ryan’s birthday, Diller was given a new shield number 110 and promoted to Detective First Class.
After the service, Stephanie, Ryan, and the rest of the family headed to St. Charles Cemetery in Farmingdale for burial.
The road to the cemetery was lined with 19 flag arches, the paper said.
