The Eagles have lost a significant defensive player due to an injury this offseason.
Outside linebacker Jonathan Greenard has been placed on the physically unable to perform list after he tore a pectoral muscle during a workout that took place before training camp.
Fortunately, the team anticipates that this won’t be a long-term issue.
“One thing we know about Greenard is he’s ready to play,” Eagles general manager Howie Roseman said recently. “Training camp is crucial, practice is essential, but with a guy like him—who prepares diligently and has extensive NFL experience—you can count on him being ready by the time the season kicks off.”
Greenard joined the Eagles following a trade with the Vikings during the 2026 NFL Draft. He later signed a four-year, $98 million contract extension, which included $50 million in guarantees.
In the trade, Philadelphia gave up a third-round pick for 2027, along with the 98th overall pick in the 2026 draft, aiming to fill the gap left by Jaelan Phillips.
Phillips, who was acquired mid-season in 2025, later signed a four-year, $120 million deal with Carolina, finishing that season with five sacks—including two during his time with the Eagles.
Greenard was expected to lead a linebacker group featuring Jayrix Hunt, Nolan Smith Jr., and AJ Epenesa.
He was drafted 90th overall in 2020 and spent his early career with the Texans. After his rookie contract concluded in 2024, he moved to the Vikings with a four-year, $72 million deal, making the Pro Bowl in his first season there.
However, his performance took a hit in 2025, where he recorded just 38 tackles and three sacks over 12 games, likely impacted by a shoulder injury that required season-ending surgery.
