SEATTLE — The Kraken roamed the deep ocean until it encountered the Blueshirt Blockade.
Jonathan Quick and the Rangers halted Seattle's four-game winning streak to start a nearly two-week homestand, with the 38-year-old netminder getting the better of him in his second game Sunday night at Climate Pledge Arena, 2-0. won. Straight shutout.
Dating back to the third period against the Sabers on Nov. 7, 128 minutes, 05 seconds have passed since Quick last gave up a point against the Rangers.
Quick, who rejected all 24 shots, improved to 4-0 on the season and is now three wins away from becoming the first American-born goaltender in NHL history to reach 400 wins.
His shutout was the 62nd in his 18-year NHL career, moving him past Turk Broda for 18th all-time in league history.
After a scoreless opening frame, Seattle drained the first six shots of the second period.
The Rangers did not record their first shot of the period until 11:47.
Although the ice was heavily tilted in the Kraken's favor compared to the first 20 minutes, it was the Rangers who were able to strike first.
At that point, head coach Peter Laviolette had been playing with a line of Artemi Panarin, Vincent Trocheck and Alexis Lafrenière for most of the night, but it was that trio that scored the first goal.
Panarin weaved through traffic and found Lafreniere's backdoor at the far post for an easy tap-in for a 1-0 lead. It was Lafreniere's seventh goal of the season, and Panarin extended his scoring streak to seven games.
Panarin, 33, has only one scoreless game so far this season.
Zach Jones then scored his first goal of the season less than three minutes into the third period, giving the Rangers some insurance.
Rangers were more organized in their own half and more intentional in the neutral zone in this game.
The Blueshirts thwarted the Kraken in transition, limiting the Kraken to just five dangerous chances in the first period, most of them in front of the goal.
The problem, according to Natural Stat Trick, was that Rangers only created two dangerous chances of their own.
As a result, the first 20 minutes ended scoreless, but Quick played a big role with six saves.
