Jonathan Turley Predicts the Length of John Bolton's Possible Prison Sentence If Found Guilty

Potential Legal Trouble for John Bolton

Jonathan Turley, a law professor at George Washington University, suggested on Friday that former national security adviser John Bolton might face a prison sentence of five to twenty years if found guilty of possessing classified information.

The FBI was reportedly still searching Bolton’s home in Bethesda, Maryland, as of 7 AM on Friday, looking for classified materials referenced in his 2020 book, “The Room Where It Happened.” Turley mentioned in an interview on “American Newsroom” that Bolton’s possession of defense-related materials could lead to “potentially increasing penalties.”

“It suggests that it could involve defense information,” Turley explained. “And that’s significant because it raises the potential penalties. We could be looking at anywhere from five to twenty years—twenty years would likely apply in cases where someone conceals information or obstructs justice.”

During Donald Trump’s first term, a criminal investigation was initiated against Bolton regarding his memoir’s classified materials, aiming to prevent its publication. A federal judge, however, ruled in favor of Bolton, allowing the book to be released.

Under Joe Biden’s administration, the Department of Justice ceased a criminal investigation and a civil lawsuit against Bolton in June 2021 related to his memoirs. Recently, the Trump administration has revived its legal actions against him.

In his book, Bolton claims that Trump once asked Chinese President Xi Jinping for assistance in the 2020 election campaign. He also indicated that Trump wanted to withhold aid to Ukraine until information related to Biden and other political opponents was provided.

The search of Bolton’s home was reportedly directed by FBI Director Kash Patel, who stated on social media that “no one is beyond the law.” Additionally, Bolton has been vocal in critiquing Trump’s handling of the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, arguing that Trump sought a meeting between President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in hopes of earning a Nobel Peace Prize.
