Jonathon Cooper Removed from NFL Exempt List
Denver Broncos linebacker Jonathon Cooper has been taken off the NFL’s commissioner exempt list as of Friday.
Although Cooper, who is 28, has not been able to practice or participate in games this season, he can now play in Denver’s Week 7 game against the Cardinals.
Cooper was placed on the exempt list by Commissioner Roger Goodell on August 30 after he faced two arrests in June related to domestic violence allegations.
Currently, Cooper is dealing with a felony charge along with three misdemeanors from these incidents.
An arrest affidavit revealed that both Cooper and his girlfriend were taken into custody following a disagreement at his residence.
The report indicated that the argument was about cheating accusations when the woman allegedly took Cooper’s phone and tossed it before attempting to look through it.
As the dispute escalated, Cooper reportedly attempted to reclaim his phone from her, leading to a physical confrontation.
According to the affidavit, he “braced his neck against [her] neck to prevent her from getting his phone” and then bit the device, breaking it.
In a recent social media update, Cooper expressed that he has been “working to better myself” while waiting for his trial.
“Playing in the NFL and representing the Denver Broncos is a privilege I do not take for granted,” he mentioned. “I’m grateful to ownership, my teammates, coaches, and everyone in the organization for their support, as well as Commissioner Goodell and the league for the opportunity to return.
“Over the last several months, I’ve spent a lot of time working to better myself. That work will continue. My focus is on being the best person, father, teammate, and member of this community I can be. I will show that commitment through my actions every day.”
It’s also noted that Cooper might face further disciplinary actions from the league down the line according to the NFL’s personal conduct policy.
