Jonquel Jones bids an appropriate farewell at Mohegan Sun Arena in Liberty victory

Jonquel Jones’ Final Game at Mohegan Sun Arena

In Uncasville, Connecticut, Jonquel Jones celebrated with her teammates after the Liberty’s 82-75 victory against the Connecticut Sun on Saturday. As she left the Mohegan Sun Arena, she took a moment to snap selfies with enthusiastic fans. Along the way, she shared hugs and high-fives with several children before heading to the visitors’ locker room.

This match marked the last time the Liberty would play at this venue, as the Sun will relocate to Houston for the upcoming season. Jones certainly made her last appearance memorable, scoring 19 points in the first half—her highest so far this season. Ultimately, she led her team with a total of 23 points and 11 rebounds, earning her 15th double-double of the season.

For Jones, it was a bittersweet farewell to a place where she cemented her status as one of the premier centers in the WNBA.

“There are a lot of memories here and many wonderful people,” Jones reflected. “I’m sad to see the Sun leave, but I’m also looking forward to what the future holds. Visiting places like Houston next year will be a new experience for me.”

Interestingly, Jones had missed the Liberty’s earlier game in Connecticut on June 8 due to illness.

Before Saturday’s game, she was honored on center court during a celebration titled “Sun Legend.” Her jersey now hangs on the wall next to other franchise greats, like Alyssa Thomas and Tina Charles.

As the game drew to a close, Jones soaked in the atmosphere one last time. “This series holds a special place in my heart,” she said. “Winning tonight was important, especially in an environment that can be challenging. We stayed composed and came through their runs to secure the win.”

Brianna Stewart, a four-time national champion, shared similar feelings. “It’s always special to play here and feel the support from the fans,” she said. “It’s tough to see the team leave, but like Jonquel mentioned, it’s exciting to think about what’s next. Today was great, and I’m glad we could end on a high note.”
