Liberty Triumphs Over Fever in Close Contest
INDIANAPOLIS – John Kel Jones stepped up when it mattered most, leading his team to a narrow 90-88 victory against the Indiana Fever.
In a thrilling finish, Jones scored 14 of his team-high 26 points during the last 10 minutes of the game, driving the Liberty’s late-game resurgence.
Sabrina Ionescu consistently found Jones, assisting him with three consecutive plays from the perimeter.
A quick six-point swing in just 42 seconds allowed the Liberty to secure their first lead in the fourth quarter.
“We know what she’s capable of, and it’s really exciting to be part of her dynamic on the court,” Ionescu commented after the game. “I was actively looking for her, trusting her ability to make those shots and knowing she can create amazing opportunities.”
Jones felt he set a strong offensive tone at the game’s outset, although he noted that his focus waned as time went on.
After a notably rough third quarter for the Liberty, Jones’s determination shone through, helping to clinch the win.
“I initially spoke about my own performance, but I quickly realized there’s no room for that,” Jones reflected. “It’s all about trusting our teammates and each other, and that’s the key to our success. It’s about keeping the game in perspective.”
Injuries and Team Updates
Leonie Fiebich’s game came to an unexpected halt in the second quarter after a knee clash with Lexie Hull affected her left shin.
She observed the rest of the match from the bench.
Coach Sandy Brondello remarked that the collision might have impacted a nerve in Fiebich’s shin. “It’s tough. She’s a vital player for us,” he noted. “JJ had to step up and play more minutes, and everyone had to pitch in. This win is really important for the team—we’re aiming for the championship.”
In a separate development, Nyara Sabbery was pulled from Saturday’s game after experiencing discomfort in her right knee during warm-ups.
Although Sabbery received significant attention, she is not expected to face any long-term issues. A team source indicated that she hadn’t sustained any underlying injuries.
Having missed her entire rookie season due to a right knee injury, Sabbery is now under careful load management, with additional rest and treatment integrated into her routine.
