The 23-year-old gymnast is currently appealing a Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) decision that dropped her from third to fifth place in the women's floor exercise final.
Romania's Ana Barbos initially received a higher score than Chile after the Americans finished their routine. Then, at the request of the American coach, the referees reviewed the footage and changed the score, pushing Chile into third place, sparking initial controversy and fierce backlash from the Romanians.
The decision to award the medal to Chile instead resulted in her joining teammate Simone Biles and Brazil's Rebeca Andrade as the first All Blacks on the podium in Olympic gymnastics history.
However, on the final day of the Olympics, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) ruled that Chile's appeal had been submitted past the one-minute deadline, changing her score and dropping her to fifth place. The next day, August 11, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) decided that the medals must be returned to Chile.
However, after the Olympics ended in August, USA Today reported that Chile and the rest of the U.S. Olympic team “no intention'' He is continuing to appeal the IOC's decision, but is asking for his medals to be returned.
Chile's lawyers argue that the coach did indeed make the request on time, that they have video evidence to prove it, and that the officials who decided to strip Chile of its medals had ties to Romania. suggested.
“Chile is asking the Supreme Court to find that the CAS decision was procedurally flawed for two reasons,” Chile's lawyers said in a statement. Go to Olympic.com.

“First, CAS violated Chile’s fundamental ‘right to a hearing’ by refusing to consider video evidence showing that Chile’s investigation was submitted on time. This directly contradicts the findings of the decision.
“Secondly, the Chilean side was not properly informed that there was a serious conflict of interest in Hamid G. Gharabi, the chairman of the CAS committee who canceled Chile's bronze medal and awarded it to a Romanian gymnast instead. The entire CAS procedure was unfair because Mr. Galavi had been Romania's lawyer for almost 10 years and was actively representing Romania at the time of the CAS arbitration.
Chile also appealed to the Swiss Federal Supreme Court to overturn the CAS decision. She claimed she was not given a fair opportunity to defend herself and that CAS did not properly consider the video evidence.
Chiles and her teammates spoke openly about the emotional toll the medal loss took on her in the months after the Olympics.
Chiles gave her first sit-down interview about the incident during a panel discussion on Capitol Hill this week. Forbes Power Women's Summit September 2024. When asked about the topic, the gymnast choked up and burst into tears.
“For me, everything that's ever happened is not about the medal, it's about the color of my skin,” Chiles said.
Chiles previously claimed in a statement posted to X on August 15 that he was facing “racial attacks” from social media users. When Chiles won the bronze medal, it marked the first time in Olympic history that there were three black gymnasts on the gymnastics podium.

“It was about the fact that something had happened to get me to this position as an athlete, and it felt like everything was stripped away.”
The controversy led to international scrutiny of the judges who scored the event. On August 15, the Center for Sports Arbitration (CAS) and the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee (USOPC) released a joint statement condemning the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) and the judges for this result.
“A great deal of heartache could have been avoided if FIG had put such mechanisms and arrangements in place,” the CAS task force said in a release. “The panel hopes that FIG will clarify the outcome of this incident with regard to these three extraordinary athletes, as well as other athletes and their support staff, so that something like this never happens again in the future.”
