Jordan Spieth donates signed glove to fan struck by stray shot at the Masters

Jordan Spieth at the Masters

It’s been quite a while since Jordan Spieth donned the iconic green jacket—over ten years, in fact. However, this week, he found himself back at the legendary Augusta National Golf Club for the 90th edition of the Masters.

The second round kicked off on Friday morning, and Spieth managed to play the first 14 holes of the day at even par, which put him five strokes behind the reigning champion, Rory McIlroy.

After a 72 in the opening round on Thursday, Spieth birdied his very first hole on Friday. Meanwhile, McIlroy was steady, parring ten consecutive holes before he stumbled with a bogey on the 12th. By the end of the round, McIlroy stood tall at the top of the leaderboard with a score of 12 under.

Spieth was a bit fortunate as well—on one of his drives, the ball veered sharply to the left and seemed destined for the trees. But then it made a surprise bounce back into the fairway. “What a bounce,” a commentator noted, mentioning that it appeared to hit a patron. Spieth took a moment to check on the patrons involved before he resumed play and later expressed his gratitude with some autographed gloves.

Spieth has become known for his bold and sometimes risky shot-making. Just last year during the Memorial Tournament in Ohio, he almost hit some fans with a wayward drive but still managed to save par. He’s also made waves in crowds during other tournaments.

Interestingly, Spieth got attention last year at Augusta when he accidentally struck a player in the groin with his putter as he headed to the first tee. Quite the moment, I’d say.

His last major victory came in 2017 at the British Open Championship. As for this year’s Masters? After finishing Friday’s second round at 1 over, he finds himself tied for 32nd place.
