I love this tournament and this golf course more than any other course on the PGA Tour, so it’s a shame that I won’t be able to run this weekend. I really appreciate the support in LA,” he told X. Spieth’s tee shot just missed the green. His chip was 3 feet to go and par was 10 inches. But the new member of the PGA Tour Policy Committee missed his chance with a four-bogey card.
Before being disqualified, Spieth had a very disappointing Friday.
In the first round of the tournament, the three-time major champion shot a 5-under 66, placing him near the top of the leaderboard.
After seven holes on Friday, he was up to 7 under and within striking distance of eventual leader Patrick Cantlay. But it all came together on the back nine.
Spieth dropped shots on the 10th, 12th and 15th, but got one back on the par-5 17th. But that momentum didn’t last, and he finished the round with a double-bogey six on the 18th.
Spieth won’t be the only big name not playing at the Genesis Invitational this weekend.
Tiger Woods was carted off due to illness early Friday and was forced to withdraw. Current U.S. Open champion Windham Clark, Matt Fitzpatrick, Keegan Bradley and Justin Thomas all missed out.
But it doesn’t matter if Cantlay continues to dominate Riviera, as he holds a five-shot lead entering Saturday.
