Jordan Spieth hits drainage ditch, clubhouse roof at Valero Texas Open

Jordan Spieth added something new to golf Saturday: the gutter ball.

That was part of his disastrous final hole in the third round of the Valero Texas Open on Saturday, just two days after he hit a hole-in-one in the same tournament.

But the ace became a distant memory for Spieth, as he made a spectacular double bogey on the 18th hole on Saturday.

The bizarre series of events included Spieth crashing the ball into a gutter.

On Saturday’s par-5 18th hole, Spieth hooked a 354-yard drive that ended up falling behind a tree and near some rocks.

Then, on his second shot, he accidentally hit a branch with his club, causing the ball to fall into a drainage ditch.

That’s when things got really interesting.

Unafraid of adventurous and risky play, Spieth was clearly determined to do something that perhaps only he could do.

Because of the awkward ball placement, Spieth’s best chance to get back to the fairway was to hit his third shot into the top of TPC San Antonio’s clubhouse.

If he is successful, the clubhouse will be considered an immovable obstruction and the nearby scoreboard will be considered a temporary immovable obstruction from which he can be dropped.

He succeeded and the ball ended up in the gutter.

Spieth was able to take the drop well, giving him a chance to save par with just over 100 yards to the green.

He was able to hit his fourth shot just 54 feet from the hole.

But, fittingly, things got worse for Spieth from there, as he three-putted for a 7 and finished at 3 under for the tournament.

He finished the round in a tie for 17th place, 12 strokes behind leader Akshay Bhatia, and finished at 6 under in the final round after shooting 3 under on Sunday.
