Jordan Spieth’s disastrous quadruple bogey leads to his worst round at Masters

Augusta National hasn’t been too kind to Jordan Spieth since he won the green jacket in 2015.

Spieth, just 21 at the time, dominated the field that year and at one point set a record for the lowest score under par.

However, the following year, just as he was about to win his second straight victory, he caught water twice on the 12th hole and was unable to recover. Just minutes after that disaster, he had to put a green jacket on Danny Willett.

Since then, he has had a mixed bag of results, finishing either in the top four or outside the top 20 in each of the past six Masters tournaments.

The latter outcome seems likely after Friday morning’s disaster on the par-5 15th hole.

The first round on Thursday was delayed due to bad weather and interrupted by darkness later in the day, forcing Spieth to finish the round on Friday. He didn’t get off to a great start, recording nine quadruple bogeys and going from two over to six over.

His third shot went over the green, and the chip rolled all the way off the green and into the water. His sixth shot also went over the green, but his second chip was able to stay on the green. He then made a two-putt in the ninth.

Spieth also had 17 bogeys and finished with a 7-over 79, his worst round at Augusta. His previous worst score was 76.

The cut line is currently +3, so unless a miracle happens, Spieth won’t be playing this weekend.

Assuming he gets cut, it would be his third missed cut in the last four tournaments. He was also disqualified from the Genesis Invitational for signing the wrong scorecard.

It’s a pretty surprising development for Spieth this season, who had two top-six finishes in his first three tournaments.
