PHILADELPHIA — A Small Gesture with Big Consequences

In an unexpected display of camaraderie, a shorter player stood up for a teammate, making waves during a recent Knicks game.

It’s been a while since the Knicks have seen such a sight this season—someone stepping up to defend a fellow player.

In the first quarter of the Knicks’ 138-89 rout against the 76ers, Mitchell Robinson went for a dunk but was harshly fouled by Trendon Watford. As Robinson lay on the floor, Jose Alvarado raced over to confront Watford.

When Watford didn’t back down, Alvarado had a few words for him before they were pulled apart.

Both Alvarado and 76ers coach Nick Nurse were assessed technical fouls.

“It was a hard foul, but I think he was even more intense in that staring match,” Alvarado remarked. “I don’t want to dwell on it. It was just a moment. I think this is when I’m at my best—being a bit more assertive. It played to my advantage.”

This incident energized the Knicks, allowing them to gain a decisive lead and control over the game.

Following the altercation, the Knicks powered through, outscoring the 76ers by 15 points in the second quarter, extending their lead from nine to 24.

Alvarado contributed nine of his total 15 points through three successful three-pointers.

“He definitely ignited something in us,” said coach Mike Brown.

Interestingly, there was a bit of a stir regarding Alvarado’s acquisition shortly before the trade deadline, especially given the recent lack of response from teammates, contrasting sharply with their reaction to another incident earlier this season.

Now, though, the Knicks seem to have found themselves an enforcer, even if he’s listed at just 6 feet tall.

After the game, the defensive players were presented with gifts, and they posed with Timberland boots—somewhat of a symbol for their fighting spirit.

It wasn’t surprising to see Alvarado already wearing his new footwear.

“That’s what we need from him,” Josh Hart noted. “His toughness, ability to lead, and knock down shots. He brings energy and physicality on defense. That’s why he’s here.”

Alvarado is best known for his aggressive defense. His offensive skills, however, leave something to be desired.

Yet, he surprised everyone by leading the team in scoring with 26 points during the game, much of it coming from beyond the arc.

As the fourth quarter rolled around, Alvarado began to toy with the 76ers, capitalizing on steals and sinking three-pointers, hitting four more in that quarter alone.

His final stats were impressive: 26 points and five steals, both season highs, along with a team-leading plus-35 rating in just 19 minutes of play. His eight three-pointers matched a career high.

“It went really well,” Alvarado said. “I had no idea I made eight. I wish I could’ve hit one more—just to break the tie.”

By the fourth quarter, a wave of Knicks fans began chanting “Jose, Jose, Jose,” rising for every one of his shots. It seems that a potential spark for the Knicks has indeed emerged.
