The Intangible Impact of Jose Alvarado on the Knicks

Jose Alvarado brings something unique to the Knicks—a certain intangible quality that could really make a difference for the team.

Sure, there are measurable aspects of his game that were crucial when the Knicks picked him up just ahead of the trade deadline. He’s known for his on-ball defense and his knack for forcing turnovers. He’s someone who can manage the ball effectively and push the pace.

But maybe—just maybe—the unquantifiable traits he has are just as impactful, if not more so.

His energy. His personality. The way he lifts his teammates’ spirits.

After Thursday’s practice, Jalen Brunson chimed in, recognizing Alvarado’s influence, saying, “Absolutely, it helps the team no matter what. You wish he was on the court more since he’s a bit quieter there. He contributes a lot for us on and off the court. His energy is constant. No matter how he’s playing, he brings that energy. That’s a talent—it keeps someone in the league for a long time. It’s great having him around.”

Brunson had a front-row seat to Alvarado’s vocal presence while they were on the bench during a recent game—even joking about Alvarado’s confidence in keeping the conversation going.

Interestingly, Alvarado has reflected on this trait of his over time. He’s come to realize that he wouldn’t be where he is today without it.

Usually, you don’t hear someone’s energy described as a learned skill, yet Brunson put it that way for Alvarado.

“I didn’t think about it when I was a kid,” Alvarado admitted. “But as I got into college and edged closer to my NBA career, I’ve recognized that’s what’s keeping me here. It’s one of the reasons I made it to the NBA; it sets me apart. I just need to bring it consistently because I understand it’s a gift I’ve been given.”

Through the ups and downs since joining the Knicks, Alvarado has maintained his vibrant energy. He kicked off strong, scoring 26 points right before the All-Star break. Yet, of course, when things are going well, it’s easy to stay enthusiastic and supportive.

However, as March rolled in, his performance took a hit. He struggled to make three-point shots, even going 0 for 11 in his first nine games of the month. This slump led coach Mike Brown to consider other players to shake things up.

Alvarado himself acknowledged his struggles during that tough period, stating he “sucked” at times. But remarkably, he didn’t let those challenges dim his enthusiasm.

He demonstrated resilience, bouncing back with a solid performance of 16 points and two steals in a blowout win against the Pacers.

The Knicks now have a distinct asset in Alvarado, which adds a lively dynamic to their roster, aside from Josh Hart, who also has a spirited presence.

“Jose has been fantastic for us,” said Coach Brown. “He’s brought a new level of energy since joining. Plus, he’s a seasoned player; he understands the league, and the league respects his journey, which has been vital for us.”

If energy can indeed be classified as a skill, then Alvarado has truly mastered it.
