Caballero Ejects Santana in Heated Exchange

Jose Caballero confronted Dennis Santana for his delays in the batter’s box, asserting that “the whole league should know who I am” following a bench-clearing incident in the eighth inning.

The Yankees infielder has gained a reputation for taking his time at the plate, a tactic that appeared to frustrate the Pirates’ pitchers even after he grounded into a double play on Monday night.

Caballero’s hit was nothing spectacular—a soft grounder back to the mound. However, things escalated rapidly, leading to a verbal exchange after the play.

After the game, Caballero expressed disbelief that he and Santana could actually hear each other’s insults. Nevertheless, the benches and bullpens erupted, resulting in a delay that seemed to stretch for minutes.

“The whole league needs to know who I am and how I operate in the box,” Caballero remarked confidently. “If someone’s annoyed by how I play, they should direct their frustration elsewhere, not at me.”

Santana acknowledged he was aware of Caballero’s strategy but insisted it “wasn’t my problem.” He mentioned that he felt too caught up in the game to tolerate the delays, especially since the Yankees had a comfortable lead of 8-5.

Manager Aaron Boone noted that while pitchers can find Caballero’s tactics surprising, he also commented, “sometimes boys will be boys.”

In response to the situation, Boone said he understands Caballero’s need to mentally prepare and suggested that others could benefit from similar focus.

“If you’re not used to it, you should practice,” Caballero chimed in, reinforcing his approach at the plate.
