Jose Castillo is joining the Mets’ bullpen just in time for the Subway Series.

Mets to Introduce New Bullpen Options This Saturday

The Mets are set to bring in some new faces for their bullpen on Saturday.

Left-handed pitcher Jose Castillo, who had a tough stint with the Diamondbacks, will be joining the Mets for their game against the Yankees.

The team picked up Castillo on Thursday in exchange for cash considerations.

Castillo has been struggling, posting an 11.37 ERA over five appearances with Arizona, and he doesn’t have any minor league options left.

The Mets’ management hinted on Friday that Genesis Cabrera might also stay on the roster, which would give them two left-handed options in the bullpen.

Cabrera has been performing well, effectively filling a hybrid role that includes both short relief and multi-inning appearances. As of Friday, he had a 1.80 ERA in four games for the Mets.

Meanwhile, Dedniel Núñez, Huascar Brazobán, and Max Kranick still have minor league options available.

Since losing AJ Minter and Danny Young to injury earlier in the season, the Mets have actively sought left-handed relief options.

Minter suffered a torn LAT and is undergoing surgery, while Young has torn ligaments in his elbow and is also set for surgery.

In addition, Frankie Montas is expected to resume activities in Brooklyn by holding a live batting practice session. Manager Carlos Mendoza mentioned that right-handers will be assessed for minor league rehabilitation assignments soon.

Montas started the season on the injured list due to a high-quality LAT strain sustained earlier in spring training.

Furthermore, Sean Manaea has been gradually ramping up his sessions on the mound as he recovers from oblique tension that has sidelined him since spring training.

Lastly, Paul Blackburn is slated to begin a double-A rehabilitation start for Binghamton on Friday. He is working his way back from inflammation in his right knee.
