From the studio to the bat, Jose Iglesias has been churning out hit single after hit single.
The “OMG” singer is working as second baseman for Platoon on the sidelines, and it looks like he’ll be doing much more than that.
The right-handed hitter Iglesias, who starts at second base against left-handed batters, hit a two-run single against right-handed relief pitcher Derek Law in Wednesday’s game against the Nationals at Citi Field, ultimately leading off a 6-2 victory.
With the score tied in the bottom of the sixth inning, with the bases loaded and no outs, manager Carlos Mendoza did not bring in Jeff McNeil to pitch.
The 34-year-old Iglesias, who has somehow become the best competitive hitter in the major leagues, hit a single to center field and gestured toward the dugout on his way to first base, galvanizing his teammates in a game in which they suddenly had a lead.
Two batters later, Harrison Bader grounded out for what appeared to be an inning-ending double play, but second baseman Luis Garcia Jr. made a wild throw to first, and the ball bounced off the fence and back to first baseman Juan Yepes.
Yepes caught the ball, spun and threw it home, but was a split second too late, allowing Iglesias to slide safely in for the extra run.
He quickly rose to his feet, turned toward the fans behind home plate and raised his right arm in the air, urging the 24,887 in attendance to rise.
They needed no prompting, as the Mets scored four runs in the sixth inning to pull off another comeback victory and move to within a half-game of the final National League wild-card spot.
The Mets (46-45) could solidify themselves as buyers at the trade deadline if they continue their strong form.
They have the makings of a winning streak after winning four of five games, already winning the series against the Nationals before Thursday’s final game and facing the Rockies before the All-Star break.
