Jose Iglesias was a defensive replacement in the eighth inning of Friday night’s Mets win after showing some slick glove work.
He took to the field after the game and showed off an entirely different skill set in a scene that you have to see in person to believe.
The 34-year-old veteran infielder (also known by the stage name “Candelita”) took the microphone after the team’s 7-2 win over the Astros and sang his original song, “OMG,” to the delight of teammates and fans who remained in the stands at Citi Field.
Iglesias, who is batting .389 since joining the Mets in May, belted out the song on the infield surrounded by Mets players and at least one backup dancer, with Pete Alonso wearing an “OMG” shirt.
The Mets had “OMG” signs hanging in the dugout during Friday’s win, most notably when Jeff McNeil held it up and flashed a beaming smile after hitting a three-run homer in the bottom of the sixth to extend the lead against Houston.
Iglesias first introduced the song to his Mets teammates when he was promoted from Triple-A Syracuse, and it quickly became a hit with the Amazings, with players admitting that they now sing along to the song as he uses it as their entrance music.
The Latin pop song has been a big hit during the Mets’ strong June run, with the team currently winning over .500%, and has even been played at Citi Field whenever the team hit a home run.
Iglesias performed the song at an event at the stadium on the Mets’ off day on Thursday, and several Mets players joined in, much to their delight.
The official music video was released on YouTube the following day, and in just seven hours it had already garnered over 13,000 views.
Iglesias took it a step further after the game, performing the song live in an almost surreal and joyous mini-concert for the thousands in attendance at the stadium and those watching on Apple TV+.
