Josh Allen Weighs in on Tush Push Controversy

Josh Allen, the quarterback for the Buffalo Bills, hasn’t shied away from one of the sport’s hot topics. Recently, the Bills joined 22 other teams in voting to ban the controversial “tush push” play, but it requires 24 votes for an official rule change.

Interestingly, Allen, known for his ability to score with his legs, thinks the tush push should stay in the game. “I’m just keeping it running if you can’t stop it, right?” he remarked. It’s a perspective that perhaps aligns with some players who see the value of tactical plays.

“Some teams do it better than others, and it’s interesting to see those that struggle with it,” Allen continued. He seems to grasp the play’s advantages, stating, “I try to play based on the interpretations of the rules, and if it’s in the rulebook, I think you can make it work differently.”

Meanwhile, the Green Bay Packers are proposing a rule change that would prevent offensive players from pushing teammates lined up just behind the snap, penalizing those who break the rules. Despite the strong opinions on both sides, safety remains a concern for the league.

Rich McKay, chair of the NFL Competition Committee, mentioned that the issue transcends just player safety, even though no injuries have been linked to the tush push. Yet, Washington Commanders linebacker Frankie Lub has criticized the play as “cheap.”

In another discussion, during a meeting with Philadelphia Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie, center Jason Kelce defended the importance of keeping the tush push. The Eagles have effectively utilized this play, showing its significance in their recent success.
