Changes for the Bills Following Tough Playoff Loss
Josh Allen’s emotional reaction has reportedly influenced significant decisions within the Buffalo Bills organization.
This week, following the dismissal of coach Sean McDermott, owner Terry Pegula spoke to the media about how the aftermath of Saturday’s playoff defeat to the Broncos played a role in that choice. A particularly striking moment was the sight of Allen, among other players, visibly upset in the locker room. This scene didn’t sit well with Pegula, as noted by ESPN.
“Initially, Allen didn’t even acknowledge him,” Pegula mentioned, reflecting on the player’s pain and how it shifted the team’s perspective. They felt they could improve.
After the heartbreaking 33-30 overtime loss in Denver, Allen expressed his sorrow, claiming he let down his teammates.
While that game had its fair share of controversial moments—particularly when a long pass from Allen to Brandin Cooks was ruled an interception—Pegula clarified that McDermott’s firing wasn’t a reaction to officiating errors. Instead, it stemmed from the game’s overall outcome.
Pegula also touched on the coaching staff’s decisions, specifically regarding struggling wide receiver Keon Coleman. He remarked that the team had “pushed” for Coleman during the draft, despite him not being a top choice for the newly appointed director of football operations and general manager, Brandon Beane.
Coleman, who was a second-round draft pick in 2024, faced issues after missing a team meeting in November and currently remains healthy.
McDermott concluded his nine-year tenure in Buffalo with a regular-season record of 98-50 and an 8-8 mark in playoffs.
As the Bills look for a new head coach, ESPN reports that they have expressed interest in meeting with former offensive coordinator Brian Daboll.
Daboll, who spent over three seasons leading the Giants before his own firing in November, had previously interviewed for the Titans’ head coaching spot, which was recently filled by Robert Saleh, the former coach of the Jets.
Allen, who fostered a strong connection with Daboll during his tenure in Buffalo, is expected to have a say in the hiring of the team’s next coach, according to ESPN.
The Bills are one of six teams currently searching for a new coach, alongside the Ravens, Steelers, Cardinals, Raiders, and Browns.
