Josh Hawley makes surprising endorsement for McConnell successor

Missouri Sen. Josh Hawley on Friday announced his support for Texas Sen. John Cornyn in the race to replace Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell. To date, this is Cornyn's first public endorsement.

Cornyn is running to replace McConnell along with Republican Sens. Rick Scott (Florida) and John Thune (South Dakota).

“I support John Cornyn as the candidate for Majority Leader,” Hawley said in a statement. “No one has done more to restore the majority over the past two years than he has.”

Hawley also said Cornyn will “work closely and effectively with President Trump to deliver on the promise of a new majority.”

“He has tirelessly raised millions of dollars for competitive Senate races, including mine,” Hawley added.

Given Mr. McConnell's expansive fundraising powers, fundraising has become a focus for each senator vying for the leadership.

On Friday, Cornyn announced: raised He has donated approximately $33 million to support Republican candidates this election cycle, bringing his total raised over the course of his career to approximately $415 million.

Hawley also cited policy integrity as a reason to support Cornyn.

“He expressed support for the RECA compromise that would provide fair compensation to hundreds of thousands of Americans poisoned by the government, including many people in Missouri,” Hawley said.

Hawley also said that Cornyn “will work closely and effectively with President Trump to deliver on the promise of a new majority.”

Republicans regained the Senate majority this term, flipping seats in Ohio, West Virginia, Pennsylvania and Montana. Senate races in Nevada and Arizona are still open, with Republicans holding 53 seats and Democrats holding 48.

With a new majority, Republican Sen. Mike Lee of Utah will moderate a forum for Senate leadership candidates on Tuesday, the eve of a meeting to vote on McConnell's successor. It's planned.
