Update on Tragic Texas Plane Crash

Update – 3:20 PM – The recent crash of a private jet on a busy highway in Texas has left local residents and the wider community in shock, triggering a significant federal investigation into the flight’s final moments.

The incident led to one fatality and several injuries. As authorities and federal agencies work to piece together the timeline, more details about the victim and the sudden mechanical issues that caused the aircraft to crash have emerged.

The deceased has been identified as Joshua Baer, 50, a well-known entrepreneur and key figure in the Austin tech scene, known for founding the startup incubator Capital Factory. Five others on the Cessna 680A Citation Latitude, including two pilots, survived and are in stable condition at a local hospital.

The crash also had serious implications beyond the aircraft itself. The plane hit a passenger vehicle on the highway, sending the driver to the hospital, where they are now stable. Additionally, an intense post-crash fire resulted in five police officers from Laredo being treated for severe smoke inhalation during their initial response.

Laredo International Airport officials reported that the flight was operated by NetJets, traveling from San José del Cabo, Mexico, to Austin when it faced critical difficulties.

Just before 10 p.m. local time, the flight crew alerted air traffic control to an emergency, citing serious mechanical issues, low fuel, and a total power loss. Shortly after, communication with the cockpit ceased, and the aircraft crashed.

A chaotic rescue operation followed the impact, vividly captured by passing motorists’ dashcams. Bystanders, instead of waiting for emergency responders, rushed toward the burning aircraft. Armed only with basic tools, they managed to break the cockpit glass and open the twisted door, helping three teenagers and the pilot escape. A Laredo firefighter even had to enter the smoke-filled cabin to rescue the final passenger.

A joint investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration is currently underway. Investigators are on the scene, assessing the wreckage and mapping out the debris field to understand how a modern jet could experience such a catastrophic failure.

NetJets has activated its crisis response teams to support the victims’ families and is cooperating with federal investigations.

“Heidi and I are deeply saddened by the passing of Josh Baer and the tragic plane crash in Laredo. Josh was a pivotal figure in driving innovation and entrepreneurship in America, making Texas a global leader,” tweeted Senator Ted Cruz (R-Texas).

Initial Crash Details

8:40 AM – A private jet crash on a highway in Laredo, Texas, has resulted in one confirmed death, according to officials.

Jose Baeza, a public information officer with the Laredo Police Department (LPD), provided information on the crash that occurred around 10:00 p.m. CST on Tuesday. He confirmed that six people were on board the small jet and that all had been safely evacuated. However, he did not release the identity of the deceased at that point since the family hadn’t been informed.

Baeza clarified that preliminary reports indicate the crash happened on the northbound Loop 20, causing both lanes to be closed. A vehicle traveling southbound was struck by debris from the aircraft. In a Facebook update around 3:30 a.m., the LPD noted that the loop would remain closed for most of the day.

At least five responding officers experienced smoke inhalation and required medical attention. Baeza explained that the highly flammable fuel from the aircraft burns at a higher temperature than regular fuel, complicating the containment efforts on the road.

Federal agencies are involved in the investigation, with the FBI already on-site. The FAA confirmed Wednesday morning that the aircraft was a Cessna 680A operated by NetJets, which acknowledged reports of injuries and one fatality.

“Our primary concern is for the well-being of our crew members, passengers, and their families during this difficult time,” NetJets stated.

The flight was reportedly headed from San José del Cabo, Mexico, to Austin, Texas. The FAA also indicated that the National Transportation Safety Board would lead the investigation.

Videos circulating online show police and citizens attempting to break the aircraft’s windows to rescue those trapped inside. Baeza noted that while some information online remains unverified, it’s clear good Samaritans played a vital role in aiding the rescue efforts.

Baeza has urged anyone with footage of the crash to submit it to investigators, and the LPD has provided a link on its Facebook page for that purpose.
