Joy Reid Proposes Juneteenth as America’s True Independence Day
In a recent discussion, journalist Joy Reid suggested that Juneteenth should be considered America’s real Independence Day, rather than July 4th. She expressed her view that Black people largely do not celebrate the traditional holiday.
These comments were made during an episode of “The Joy Reid Show” on YouTube, where she spoke with analyst Alex Wagner. Reid acknowledged that while her “spicy White friends” enjoy the Fourth, many in the Black community feel differently.
“Black folks, we will take that day off, we will barbecue because we’re off, but … nobody Black I know is really excited about the 4th of July,” Reid mentioned, adding that the day represents, as Frederick Douglass noted, a celebration of slaveholders who freed themselves from taxes.
Recalling Douglass’s famous 1852 speech, where he stated, “This Fourth of July is yours, not mine. You may rejoice, I must mourn,” Reid highlighted the complexity of the holiday for African Americans.
She indicated, “For Black people, particularly for African Americans, there’s a duality to Fourth of July that is hard to reconcile.” She expressed that Juneteenth is more representative of true freedom, stating that the true essence of democracy in America didn’t exist until slavery ended.
Reid elaborated that democracy was further compromised until post-Civil War amendments were enforced, which wasn’t entirely achieved until the civil rights movements of the 1960s.
As Wagner critiqued former President Donald Trump’s representation of America, Reid countered that Trump symbolizes a significant part of the nation’s historical fabric.
“Donald Trump represents the majority of American history. He is our just desserts,” Reid asserted, suggesting that while Barack Obama embodied progress, Trump encapsulates the darker aspects that still linger within the country.
She characterized Obama as a figure of unity, while describing Trump as the nation’s “demon,” noting, “There’s still a demon inside of us. And he represents that. And it’s like we almost needed Trump to exist so we have to face the demon.”
