JPMorgan Chase DEI style guide nixes terms like ‘manpower’ and ‘blacklist’

Jumping through these linguistic hoops is no easy task.

JPMorgan Chase employees scoffed at a recently released diversity equity and inclusion style guide that cracks down on anti-“woke” language.

A glossary of “not recommended” words and phrases is on the company’s intranet and was obtained by the Post courtesy of an anti-woke whistleblower.

“Our language matters. And just like our diverse culture of respect, equity, and inclusion, the words and terminology we use as communicators will continue to evolve and adapt to the global community that intersects with our values.” “To communicate with empathy, we recommend using the most inclusive terminology,” the guide says in its preamble. I am declaring.

Employees should avoid gendered terms such as “hours” and “headcount” and use “hours worked” and “workforce” instead.

References to “good schools” and “good neighborhoods” are replaced with the words “well-resourced.” The company recommends a “banned list” instead of a “blacklist.” Corporate “powwows” that may offend Native Americans are also prohibited.

The glossary delves deep into geopolitics and encourages employees to always mention the “Ukraine war” and refrain from calling it a “conflict.” There was no explanation in the glossary. Huh?

Other prohibited words include “cakewalk.”

“Like ‘white glove treatment,’ this term is rooted in the history and mistreatment of enslaved African Americans in the United States. Use ‘easily done or accomplished’ instead.” Banks pointed out. The phrase originates from an antebellum dance once performed by slaves.

Even flattery can get you into trouble. The word “articulate” is offensive “when used to compliment members of a particular community.” This statement suggests that the person in question is expected to be of lesser ability, intelligence, or speaking ability. ”

The glossary also includes bloated definitions of woke warhorses like “microaggressions,” which are defined as “hostile, derogatory, or everyday verbal, nonverbal, or environmental belittling, belittling, or insulting actions, remarks, or questions that convey negative emotions.” “Messages to individuals or groups are based in whole or in part on the community with which that person is aligned or belongs.”

Company officials dismissed the woke words as noise.

“They’re creating unnecessary friction and aren’t helping anyone,” a JPMorgan executive told the Post, adding that behind the scenes the bank remains focused on the quality and merit of its people and products. he claimed.

“No one in the company takes this seriously. This is a bank, after all. We have a huge DEI infrastructure, but no results to show for it.”

JPMorgan has long prided itself on the authenticity of its DEI. The company maintains a complete web page dedicated to presenting its information. Exercise support. In 2020, as violent Black Lives Matter riots raged across the U.S., the company announced a $30 billion commitment to “advance economic inclusion for Black, Hispanic, and Latino customers.” did.

Bank insiders say rank-and-file employees are mainly making fun of the Newspeak incident.

“People should oppose DEI because DEI is a layer of professional (and well-paid) racial grievance bureaucracies embedded in every profession that improves the organization’s real goals. “Not for the sake of it, but to create a racialized struggle session,” said Jason Curtis Anderson, policy director at the nonprofit One City Rising.

A JPMorgan representative insisted that the glossary has existed within the company since 2021 and that following the suggestion was “completely voluntary.”
