Shortly after Trump’s conviction on Thursday, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) appeared on Newsmax TV to criticize the court for its handling of the case.
He called it a “gross abuse” of the judicial system and warned that New York Judge Juan Marchan had “undermined the credibility of every judge in the country.”
“I have two similar emotions, Greta,” Trump said during Thursday’s “On the Record” broadcast. “Number one, I’m angry, I’m furious, and number two, I’m heartbroken. I’m angry because I’m seeing a terrible abuse of our justice system. What’s unfolded in New York is a travesty of justice. And I’m heartbroken because the rule of law matters in America. You and I have fought for the rule of law our whole adult lives, and our justice system is supposed to guarantee equal justice under the law for all. Today, the New York justice system has become a global laughing stock. This was a political decision that every banana republic in the world will acknowledge. And they know exactly what it was. This was a partisan Democratic attack on a political opponent. And I have to say, Greta, I was hoping that there would be at least one of the 12 jurors who would hang on and say, ‘I’m not going to be a part of this fraud.’ And I’m not going to be a part of this political attack. And sadly, there wasn’t one.”
Host Greta Van Susteren asked whether it was appropriate to have cameras in Marchan’s courtroom.
“I think there should have been cameras in this courtroom to show this judge’s complete abuse of power,” Cruz responded. “I think this judge has diminished the credibility of every judge in America, because when you walk into a courtroom — and God forbid, when you walk into a courtroom as a criminal defendant or as a civil litigant — you expect the judge to be impartial. You expect the judge to be impartial. You expect the judge to follow the law. This judge was partisan. He should have worn a Biden campaign hat while sitting at the bench. His ruling is ridiculous. It was clear from the jury instructions that he had one objective, which was to get Donald Trump. That’s not the job of a judge. That’s a sure thing for a reversible error. And I think this decision will be overturned on appeal. I think it’s certain to be overturned on appeal.”
“But I think it will most likely happen after the election. The purpose of this false indictment was two words in Joe Biden’s election manifesto that I read just before I appeared on the show. In words that will surprise no one on Earth, they called Donald Trump a ‘convicted felon,'” he added. “You and I will hear those words repeated about a billion times by Democrats and the corporate media between now and Election Day. The purpose was to scream felon, felon, felon, felon. This was politics, not law.”
