Earlier this week, Yankees players Aaron Judge and Anthony Rizzo attended the U.S. Open with their wives, and on Saturday night, outfielder Juan Soto and utility player Osvaldo Cabrera were at Arthur Ashe Stadium to watch Daniil Medvedev beat Flavio Cobori.
Outside I took a photo with Kobori. Photographs were taken on court before the match, which Medvedev won 6-3, 6-4, 6-3, and the pair were also photographed in the suite after the match began.
Soto, who will likely be the only Yankee to attend the U.S. Open with his free-agent battle slated to begin after the 2024 season, wore a Dad Gang hat and No. 22 on a chain, while Cabrera wore a white shirt.
The two made the trip to Queens after the Yankees lost 6-5 to the Cardinals in the Bronx early Saturday morning, a game that ended in a painful defeat when Cabrera was called out in the ninth inning for a pitch-clock violation.
Cabrera batted a ball to get the count full, but after coming off the plate to adjust his batting gloves and take a practice swing, home plate umpire Ben May ruled that Cabrera, making his second start that day at third base, had not returned to the plate to engage Cardinals closer Ryan Helsley with eight seconds left on the pitch clock.
“I thought I'd make it in time,” Cabrera said after the game. “I don't know if I'll make it in time, but at the same time, it's my fault, so I've got to be better in that situation. [those are] “rule”
He finished hitless for four with two strikeouts, while Soto was one for five with two strikeouts, then energized the Yankees with a double down the right field line with two outs in the ninth inning.
The Yankees and Cardinals finish a three-game series on Sunday while the round of 16 continues in Flushing, with one of the highlights of the day being the US Open Trophy match between defending champion No. 3 Coco Gauff and No. 13 Emma Navarro.
In the men's singles, two of the top remaining Americans, 12th seed Taylor Fritz and 20th seed Francis Tiafoe, also have a chance to reach the quarterfinals with wins.
