Juan Soto received an official Yankees welcome on John Sterling’s home run call.
The Yankees outfielder hit a shot off Astros relief pitcher Brian Abreu over the left-field wall in the seventh inning, hitting his first home run for the Yankees and giving the Bronx Bombers the lead.
As Soto crushed the ball and circled the bases, Yankees WFAN radio commentator Sterling spoke up anew.
“Then the ball went through the air, over the left field line, and into the wall — it was gone. It went over the high wall.” “Juan Soto’s first home run as a Yankee, it was a fly ball down the left field line.”
Then Sterling got to the fun part.
“There’s a picture of Soto, a home run into the left field seats. He’s juunderful and great,” Sterling said, singing the last three words. “And the Yankees took a 4-3 lead.”
It’s unclear exactly what Sterling ended up referring to with this song, but the lyrics are consistent with the 1920s song “’S Wonderful,” written by George Gershwin.
Soto’s first home run was officially 349 feet at 162 miles per hour, but Sterling’s call gave it even more momentum.
