New York State Supreme Court Justice Juan Marchan reportedly allowed a juror who celebrated former President Donald Trump’s 2020 defeat on social media to remain on the jury list.
Trump’s unprecedented trial began Monday morning with jury selection, the first day of what could be two weeks of proceedings. The trial could last until June.
During jury selection on Tuesday, Trump’s lawyers tried to block potential jurors from staying in the case because they celebrated Trump’s 2020 loss, Fox News reported.
“They wanted to make a peremptory challenge to excuse the juror because she said she could be impartial, but she clearly didn’t want to go on social media like celebrating President Trump’s loss in 2020. “Because I thought there was a media post,” Trace Gallagher said. report, “And they challenged her. The judge said, ‘No, she’ll be fair.’ She’ll stay here. ”

Thirty-four of the 96 potential jurors remain the first choice in the jury selection process for President Trump’s criminal trial, court journalists reported Monday.
The remaining potential jurors will take the next step Tuesday, filling out a questionnaire asking about their media consumption, where they live and whether they are politically active.
After the questionnaire, lawyers from both sides will vet the candidates. Lawyers could look at jurors’ social media and ask more personal questions to screen for bias.
